The Lake of the Woods Museum has been actively collecting artifacts since its inception in 1964. The Museum’s current collection includes over 25 000 items, including Indigenous objects, artifacts of the fur trade, household goods, minerals, textiles, industrial and business items, and navigational gear characteristic of the Kenora, Keewatin, Jaffray Melick, and Lake of the Woods regions. In addition to its collection of artifacts, the Museum also functions as a repository for archival materials, including business records, correspondence, maps, memoirs, journals, and photographs.
Holdings cover a wide range of subject matter, including: the Anishinabe people and information about their occupation; boundary disputes; cemeteries; fire departments; general health and welfare; Royal Jubilee Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and the General Hospital; mining; and the Red Cross. Researchers may place a research request via phone or email for more information on holdings.
