The Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre is a museum that houses and displays documents and objects that reflect the heritage of the Northwest Territories. It houses over 217, 300 objects from the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, highlighting various aboriginal and non-aboriginal groups such as the Dene, Inuit, Métis and Inuvialuit. Some of these objects include footwear, clothing, tools, instruments, furniture, dolls, accessories and baskets.
The Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre contains various temporary and permanent exhibits such as Moosekin Boat and Dioramas as well as notable digital exhibits including Objects Showcase, Sharing our Stories, Narrative Threads, Steppe Bison Virtual Exhibit, Hunters of the Alpine Ice, NWT History Timeline, We live Securely by the Land, Berger Inquiry Archive, Journals of Norman Robinson, Lessons from the Land, Ice Age Bison Discovery, The 1962 Dogrib Tea Dance, Archaeological expedition to Kuukpak, Idaa Trail, The search for Franklin place names, Songs of the Tłı̨chǫ drum dance, A Place of Honour, Journey to Kitigaaryuk, Yamǫ́rıa and Qilalukkat! Beluga! In addition, the Centre also has various photographic exhibits online, including René Fumoleau: Seasons of Beauty, James Jerome: Through a Gwich’in lens, Henry Busse: Yellowknife’s first professional photographer, Berger Inquiry photo galleries, Bern Will Brown: A time of change and Yellowknife’s 75th Anniversary. Other notable audio and video exhibits include Berger Inquiry speeches and interviews, The CBC Northern Service, Berger Inquiry Retrospective, Heritage Fair 2014, Land Up Here, Caribou Skin Lodge Project and Birchbark Canoe Project. There are also notable place names exhibits including Sambaa K’e place names, Traditional Ulukhaktok place names and Gwich’in place names.
