        Description: A variable number of scholarships to be awarded to students who have completed Level I and an additional 30 – 75 units on the basis of excellence in an Honours program in the Faculty of Humanities. The purpose of the scholarships is to enable the recipients to study outside Canada during the twelve months prior to the final Fall/Winter session. Eligible Humanities students must be entering their penultimate year in September.

        Description:
         The award, with its emphasis on experiential learning, is intended to create transformative opportunities for students from all faculties and programs, from undergraduate to graduate and professionalThe recipient of the award shall be an individual who wishes to engage in a 4-12 month, self-directed, enrichment experience, outside their chosen program of study, and wishes to explore a project of personal significance that will amplify the recipient’s university experience while engaging in experiential learning at home or abroad. The goal of the award is to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange which may ultimately lead to societal benefit. Each applicant should propose a unique experience outside his/her usual field of study, outline the details of this experience (timeline, budget, supervision, outcomes), and explain why it will enhance the applicant’s future career or societal contribution. Applicant must have full-time status as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional student at McMasterThe project must take place during the academic career or directly after. Undergraduate applicants must have completed a minimum of 30 units. Undergraduate students must have a minimum Fall/Winter Sessional Average of 10.0 or a cumulative average of 9.5. Graduate students must have a minimum cumulative average of 10.0. Medical students must be in good standing.

      • E. T. Salmon Scholarship (Classics and History Students)

        Description:
         To be awarded to the student who has completed Level I and an additional 60 – 75 units of any Honours Classics or Honours History program, including at least 12 units of Ancient History and Archaeology, and who, in the judgment of a committee of the two Departments, shows outstanding achievement and promise. The purpose of the scholarship is to enable the winner to travel and study abroad during the vacation before the final Winter Session, and/or to fund the final year of study at McMaster; candidates should submit to the committee a statement of their aims and plans for study. Eligible students must be completing Level III in April and entering their final year of study in September.

      • Gabrielle Erasmi Travel Scholarship to Italy (Humanities Students)

        Description:
         To be awarded to an outstanding student who has completed Level II of a Humanities program. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist with the expenses of travel and study in Italy for academic credit at McMaster University. Eligible students must be completing Level II in April.

        Description:
         The Hamilton Matters Fund was created to offer students funding to participate in events and activities taking place in the City of Hamilton that allow students to learn more about current issues in the City of Hamilton, think critically about how their experience in the City of Hamilton can provide them with a new perspective on the topics studied in class, and reflect on how what they learn through their degree can contribute positively to the City of Hamilton. The fund provides reimbursement for all or most of the cost of participation in events/activities pre-selected by the Experiential Education office. To be eligible for funding, students must be registered in the Faculty of Social Sciences in a degree program, in good academic standing with the university (not on academic probation), in good financial standing with the university (no outstanding financial accounts on the student record), and completing a minimum of 18 units during the current Fall/Winter session. Other students who may be eligible, but are required to pay a $50 administration fee are those who meet the above criteria and are registered in fewer than 18 units in the Fall/Winter session or Arts & Science or Humanities students who are registered in a combined Honours degree program with a Social Sciences discipline. Students can apply for and receive funding through the Hamilton Matters Fund more than once per academic year, but never more than once for the same activity during their academic studies.

      • Howard P. Whidden Scholarship

        Description:
         To be awarded to a student who has completed six units of French and who shows ability and promise in the use of the French language. The recipient will study at a Quebec university during the summer. Eligible students must be completing at least Level II in April.

      • Jennifer J. Dunn Scholarship (Geography and Earth Sciences Students)

        Description:
         To be awarded to a student who has completed at least Level II in an Honours B.Sc. program in the School of Geography and Earth Sciences and who is pursuing experiential learning in geology through volunteerism, internship, and/or travel and study. Student must demonstrate a strong potential in geology. Eligible students must be completing Level II in April.

      • Jimmy Fong International Outreach Travel Award (Engineering Students)

         To be awarded to a student who, in the judgment of a selection committee, demonstrates high academic achievement, and is pursuing an international relief and development project under the auspices of Engineers Without Borders in an underdeveloped, disadvantaged area outside of North America. Preference to be given to a student in the Faculty of Engineering and/or a project in China. Students must be completing at least Level II in April.

      • Joan Jackson Dunbar Travel Scholarship (English Students)

        Description:
         To be awarded to a woman student who has completed Level I and an additional 60 – 75 units of an Honours program in English for excellence in the work of the program (with emphasis on English). The winner must have secured all her secondary school education in Canada. The award is to be used for study and travel in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during the vacation before the final Fall/Winter session. Eligible students must be completing Level III in April and entering Level IV in September.

      • John P. Evans Travel Scholarship

        Description:
         To be awarded to a student who has completed at least 30 units beyond Level I of an Honours program with notable academic standing and has demonstrated a scholarly interest in some aspect of Asian languages, history or cultures, with preference being given to a student wishing to study in China. Eligible students must be completing at least Level II in April.

      • Killam Fellowships Program
        Granting Institution: American Killiam Trusts and Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, administered by Fullbright Canada
        Amount: US$5,000 per semester plus a health insurance allowance of US$500. Fellows may also apply for an in-country travel grant of up to US$800

        Description:
         The Killam Fellowships Program provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in Canada to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in the United States. Students may participate in the program either as a direct exchange student (registering at their home university, paying their home fees, and attending the host university as an exchange visitor) or as a self-placed visiting student (registering at the host university and paying host tuition fees). To be eligible for a Killiam Fellowship, students must be a Canadian citizen, be currently enrolled, and in good standing, as a full-time undergraduate student (BA, BSc or BAH) at a degree-granting institution in Canada (please note that professional degrees are normally not eligible); be expected to be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in good standing during the upcoming academic year; should he/she be selected for an award, be expected to receive an undergraduate degree in the Spring 2016, or beyond; meet the eligibility requirements and regulations of the home university; be proficient in English; have a superior academic record; be able to complete all steps of the application process prior to the published deadlines; and be nominated by the home university (in the instance of the direct exchange program).http://www.fulbright.ca/programs/killam-fellowships.html

        Description:
         Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) are intended to stimulate interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage students to undertake graduate studies and pursue a research career in these fields. They help students to gain research work experience that complements studies in an academic setting.  Interested undergraduate students should apply to the department in which their research supervisor is appointed, which may not be the student’s home department.       • Rhodes Scholarship
        Granting Institution: Rhodes Trust
        Amount: Roughly $50,000 per year (includes tuition, college fees, and a stipend covering living expenses for two and possibly three years study at the University of Oxford)
        Eligibility: Undergraduate students university-wide in final year of study planning on attending graduate school

        Deadline: To apply for the Rhodes Scholarship, students must first receive an Institutional Endorsement. To receive an Institutional Endorsement, McMaster students must submit an application to the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships in the September of their final year of study.

        Description:
         The Rhodes Scholarship entitles the winners to study at Oxford University in England for two and possibly three years commencing in October. Eleven Rhodes Scholarships are awarded to Canadians each fall (two in Ontario). Applicants for the Rhodes Scholarship must be on the Deans’ Honour List (a cumulative average of at least 10.5);except for medical students, have received an undergraduate degree before taking up the scholarship; be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident in Canada; and be between 18 and 24 years of age. Selection is made on the basis of school and college records without written examination.  The qualities which will be considered in making the selection are: literary and scholastic attainment; fondness and success in outdoor sports, qualities of truthfulness, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship; exhibition of moral force of character and of instincts to lead and to take an interest in one’s contemporaries.  Qualities of both character and intellect are the most important requirements for a Rhodes Scholarship and these are what the Selection Committees will seek.  Financial need does not receive special consideration.https://sfas.mcmaster.ca/scholarships/rhodes-scholar/

        Description:
         The Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) are intended to cultivate and support research partnerships between undergraduate students and faculty members. There are 4 awards available to students in the Arts & Science Program, each worth $6,000This amount is intended to provide for 15 weeks of full-time, research-based activity over the summer term. It is the responsibility of the student to secure the agreement of a faculty member to supervise the research project. The faculty member may belong to any Faculty at McMaster. In past competitions, students who worked more closely with their proposed faculty supervisor in developing their research project had an increased likelihood of success in securing the award. To be eligible, a student must be a full-time undergraduate student currently enrolled in the Arts & Science Program, be eligible to work in Canada, not have received more than two USRAs during their academic studies at McMaster, and have a CA and SA of at least 8.0. Preference will be given to level 2 and 3 students and students in level 4 of a five-year program.

        Description:
         The McMaster Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) provide undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities with an opportunity to receive $6,000 to cover 15 weeks of full-time research-based activity in the summer. The intent is for the research to be student-initiated.  In past competitions, students who worked more closely with their faculty supervisor in developing their research project had an increased likelihood of success in securing the award.  To be eligible, students must be an undergraduate student currently enrolled in the Faculty of Humanities, be eligible to work in Canada (International students must provide a hard copy of their work permit), not have received more than two USRAs during their academic studies at McMaster, and have a Cumulative Average of at least 8.0.  Preference will be given to level 2 and 3 students and to those who have not previously received a USRA.

        Description:
         Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRAs) are intended to cultivate and support research partnerships between faculty members and undergraduate students. The USRAs provide an opportunity to receive $6500 to cover 15 weeks of full-time, student-initiated, research-based activity during the Summer Term. To be eligible for a USRA, a student must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the Faculty of Social Sciences in a degree program, be eligible to work in Canada, have received fewer than two (2) USRAs during his/her academic studies at McMaster. Students registered in the Faculty of Humanities who are registered in a Combined Honours degree program with a Social Sciences discipline will apply to the Faculty in which their supervisor resides. Students registered in the Arts and Science Program are not eligible to apply for the Social Sciences USRA. Students are eligible to apply for a USRA in their graduating year. For graduating students, preference will be given to students who have applied for graduate studies commencing the following September.

        Description:
         To be granted to a student in the Faculty of Humanities who is participating in an international exchange program and who demonstrates financial need. Preference to be given to students who have taken courses in French and German. Only current OSAP recipients are eligible. Eligible students must be completing Level II in April.
