The Ambrose McGhie Medical Museum is owned and administrated by the Hamilton Academy of Medicine. It was dedicated in 1971. Dr. Ambrose McGhie maintained an abiding interest in the history of Medicine and was an avid collector of medical memorabilia. As the chair of the History and Archives Committee of the Hamilton Academy of Medicine, he contributed to the early deliberations regarding the creation of a museum. In the 1960s Dr. McGhie donated his collection of medical books and artifacts to the Academy for use in the developing museum.

The museum maintains an extensive collection of historical medical equipment donated by members of the Hamilton Academy of Medicine. Among the artifacts are unique objects such as Sir William Osler’s microscope. The museum’s archival holdings document the history of the practice of health care in Hamilton and the surrounding communities.

The museum is a private institution and can be accessed only by permission of the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Academy of Medicine.
