The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada Archives (CSJ) collects, preserves, arranges, describes, and makes accessible the records of enduring value of the congregation. The Archives is the permanent repository for all records produced by the congregation. It is also a rich source of information on the origin, history, spirit, charism, and growth of the CSJ and provides the history of their missions and ministries. The records are in many formats including manuscripts, books, photographs, color transparencies, audiovisual materials, artifacts, and textiles. While the archives are considered private, the CSJ is open to requests for information from all who wish to learn about the CSJ.
The main office of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada is in Peterborough, Ontario. The Congregation also has offices in Hamilton, London and Pembroke. The main archives is located in London, Ontario, and there are neighbourhood archives in Hamilton, London, Peterborough and Pembroke.
The Galahad Hospital fonds (1927-1978, 1928-1995) consists of 6 cm of textual records, 1 plaque, and 98 photographs. The fonds contains records pertaining to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Galahad, Alberta, including written histories about the hospital, commemorative materials related to the hospital, and hospital administrative materials.
The Killam General Hospital fonds (1930-2010) consists of 10 cm of textual material, 125 photographs, 5 postcards, and 1 architectural drawing. The fonds consists of histories for Killam, Galahad, Rimbey and Stettler hospitals that have been combined to create a history of the Alberta hospitals run by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Killam General Hospital was opened for the longest period of all these hospitals, and therefore a large quantity of the combined history is about this hospital. The fonds contains community histories, a timeline, staff listings, correspondence, newsletters, pamphlets, and photographs.
The Rimbey Hospital, Alberta, fonds (1926-1964) contains 2 cm of textual records and 7 photographs. The fonds consists of histories written about the hospital, a newspaper, newspaper clippings, correspondence, a memorandum of agreement, financial papers, a staff list, an invitation, and a newsletter.
The St. Joseph’s Hospital, Sarnia, fonds (1944-2004) contains 25 cm of textual records, 3 bound volumes, 14 scrap books, 8.5 cm of newspaper clippings, 375 black and white photographs, 188 colour photographs, and 1 audio cassette. The fonds contains records pertaining to the activities of the hospital and its associated administrators, staff, and organizations, including histories, annals, financial documents, governance records, photographs of people, the buildings and events, and news clippings.
The St. Mary’s Hospital, London, fonds (1946-1996) contains 18 cm of textual records, 3 photographs, and 1 photo album. The fonds contains meeting notes, donations list, newspaper photos, newspaper clippings, invitations, correspondence, reports, pamphlets, memos, constitutions, and by-laws.
