Henrietta Alderson (1915-2000)

Henrietta Alderson was one of the original faculty members of the School of Nursing, McMaster University. She was one of the three founding members of the undergraduate nursing program at McMaster. She wrote the history of the School of Nursing, “Twenty-five years a-growing.”

The collection contains drafts of her publication, research materials, photographs, oral history audiotapes, and a collection of nursing uniforms. The collection also contains the doll sized historical nursing uniforms Alderson created.

COAHL – Consortium of Ontario Academic Health Libraries

Established in 1994, the Consortium of Ontario Academic Health Libraries (COAHL) grew out of an Associated Medical Services Inc. (AMS) initiative to “link” the Ontario university libraries serving medical schools.

The collection contains the planning and administrative papers of COAHL, including its constitution, licences and agreements, meeting minutes, correspondence and budget information.

Clara Graham Elman (1923-2013)

Clara Graham Elman was one of the original faculty members of the School of Nursing, McMaster University. She also taught surgical nursing in Colombo, Sri Lanka and at the Hamilton General Hospital.

The collection contains interview notes (biographical), correspondence with G.P. Gilmour and H.G. Thode of McMaster University, nursing program planning reports, compact disk and negatives of portraits, McMaster yearbooks, and McMaster newspapers.

Margaret Ewart (dates unknown)

Margaret Ewart was the wife of Dr Hugo Ewart, the medical superintendent at the Mountain Sanatorium, 1945-1960.

The collection contains biographical details of Dr Hugo Ewart, transcript of oral history interview of Dr Ewart, studies on Inuit TB patients, photographs of Shirley Smith, a nurse and Mrs Ewart, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a memorial video about Dr Ewart.

Jan Joyce Houghton (dates unknown)

Jan Joyce Houghton was a graduate of the Hamilton General Hospital School of Nursing class of 1946B.

The collection includes 5 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, photographs, lecture notes and exams (1943-1946), forms, Hamilton General Hospital Student Handbook 1952, embroidered quilt with the autographs of graduates of the 1946B class, and a copy of “Memories: an informal history of the Hamilton Civic Hospitals.”

Anita Isaac (dates unknown)

Anita Isaac was a head nurse at the Mountain Sanatorium and Chedoke Hospital. For 2014/2015, she is on the Board of Directors for Hamilton Health Sciences.

The collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, brochures of Chedoke General, issues of hospital newsletters, photographic slides of buildings and grounds of the Mountain Sanatorium, details of the Chedoke nursing history and operations, reports, and nurses’ association agreements.

Johanna Rabinowitz (c. 1927-2009)

Johanna Rabinowitz was the wife of Dr Paul Rabinowitz, a physician at the Mountain Sanatorium in Hamilton. They traveled to the Arctic to help with the tuberculosis mass surveys on the C.D. Howe.

The collection contains photograph slides of the Mountain Sanatorium, Inuit, and Eastern Arctic Patrol.

Ralph Wilson (b. 1953)

Ralph Wilson is the author of “Chedoke: more than a sanatorium.”

The collection contains research material for the book, including oral history transcripts, audiotapes, and photographs.
