The collection contains Hamilton City Directories from 1853 to the present.
- City Directories usually include a listing of residents, with their occupation and address.
- They also include listings of businesses, churches, schools, social organizations, and municipal services.
- Some of the earlier Hamilton directories (pre-1900) also include suburban areas and smaller townships and villages.
The Library also has a collection of directories dating from 1957 to the present for:
- Ancaster
- Burlington
- Dundas
- Stoney Creek
- Waterdown

The Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has donated its research material to the Library.
